AL QAEDA have selected their longtime number two to become public enemy number one. 
As we reported here there were a number of candidates to fill the power vacuum left by the death of terror chief Osama Bin Laden, but now Ayman al-Zawahri has been chosen to lead them according to a statement posted Thursday on a website affiliated with the network.
The son of an upper middle class Egyptian family of doctors and scholars, his father was a pharmacology professor at Cairo University's medical school and his grandfather was the grand imam of Al-Azhar University, a premier center of religious study.

But this apple fell far from the tree and now, like Bin Laden, it's thought Al-Zawahari, who will turn 60 next week will direct the group's operations from somewhere on the Pakistan, Afghanistan border.   Al-Zawahri heaped praise on his predecessor in a videotaped message last month.
He said: "He went to his God as a martyr, the man who terrified America while alive and terrifies it in death, so much so that they trembled at the idea of his having tomb."

MEET Saif al-Adel - The World's most wanted man and Al Queda's new leader. 
The Egyptian militant has filled the power vacuum left by Osama Bin Laden after he was taken out by Navy SEALs' in the deadly raid on his Pakistani hideout.
Already the terror group's operational leader he is now in overall charge while the organization collects pledges to appoint Ayman al-Zawahri, bin Laden's top deputy, as Al Qaeda's new leader. Noman Benotman, an analyst with the Quilliam Foundation think tank and a former associate of bin Laden, told Reuters contacts in jihadist circleshad confirmed this succession.

He told them: "This role that he has assumed is not as overall leader, but he is in charge in operational and military terms." 
As we reported here he is thought to have established the group's training facility at Ras Kamboni in Somalia and may have trained Somalis who took part in the first battle of Mogadishu against US forces which saw two Black Hawk helicopters shot down by rocket propelled grenades. 
He's believed to be in Iran, which he has a long standing relationship with going back to the early 1990's. 
There is $5million bounty on his head but it is not known whether that will rise now he is top dog.
